Intermediate/Novice News, Notes and Stuff Week of October 25-31, 2005
Cordray and Johnson Win District 7 North American Pairs
Our very own Maurice Cordray and Ted Johnson TODAY! won the District 7 North American Pairs qualifying event in Spartanburg, SC. By winning this prestigious event Maurice and Ted will represent District 7 (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Eastern Tennessee) in the Non-Life Master Strata at the 2006 Spring Nationals — March 30 - April 9 in Dallas TX.
The NAP is a national qualifying event much like the US Open in golf/tennis where players have to qualify at at each level of competition in order to play for the North American Pairs. In years past District 7 has held sub-district qualifying rounds with the final district championships in January. This is the first year that District 7 has eliminated the sub rounds. By winning this event Maurice and Ted win a free trip to the 'Big D' in March for the three days of competition.
I just talked to the group (Maurice, Ted, Peggy, Alan, et.al.) on their way back from Spartanburg and everyone was excited. I will not be able to download the final scores until tomorrow but apparently Maurice and Ted topped the field of 28 teams by a full 20 matchpoints. I hope to be able to post the qualifying scores here by Tuesday.
Tournaments are
what duplicate bridge are all about. Club games are fun, no questions
about it, but if you love the challenge of duplicate, then you are going to
love tournaments. There is nothing like a tournament. If you
think you love rubber bridge, then you haven't experienced a ballroom full
of bridge: wall to wall tables and people everywhere. Hilton Head's
own Camellia Classic is November 10-13 at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis
Club. I have posted the tournament schedule in the Library.

November Special Games/Events I have added a section in the index column for special games and events. Each month I will highlight upcoming special games/events so that you may plan ahead. On the schedule for November are the Camellia Classic: November 10-13, ACBL Charity Game: November 21st and Interclub Championship: November 30th.
Library If you have problems finding the handout from an earlier lesson and cannot remember the date of the lesson ... try the Library. My handouts on Minimum Offshape Takeout Doubles and Balancing Double, as well as other documents such as the Novice Convention Card and Instructions, can be accessed and printed from the Library. In the Library you will find the papers I have written for the Monday Night game and much more.... just click on the Library button at the top of this page.
As many of you know, I am new to running 299'er games. After doing some research on setting up "restricted games", I have made changes/corrections to three games. First, on October 10th I played in the game to complete a table and avoid a sit-out. My partner for the night, Paul Gibson, and I placed second. I have been doing some research and found how to reward both Paul, for his play that night, and not disadvantage other teams. I have rescored the game such that the next team placing behind Paul and myself E/W have been promoted from 3rd to 2nd place and the the 4th place promoted to 3rd place. With these promotions the team of Jane McKay and Linda Anderson-Jones were promoted to 4th place and received masterpoints. This is a win-win for everyone - Paul gets his points and each of the other teams receive their rank as if Paul and I did not play in the game. It is kinda funny looking, but if you check the scores for the 10th you will see two teams finish 2nd E/W. To do this requires me to play under a pseudonym. Just call me Mickey ... not your ordinary mouse.
And on October 17th and 24th in haste to set up the games I set up the two games as Open Games (unrestricted) not as a 299'er games (restricted). Both of these games have been rescored as 299'er games to preserve the sanction on the games. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause anyone.
Monday, October 24th Game Last night's game put us into double digits ... for the first time we reached 10 full tables! It was great to see Doug and Kellie Gowland back in Hilton Head (the snow birds are returning). Continuing the theme on doubles, the lesson was on Balancing Doubles (Hilda) and how they differ from Takeout Doubles (Glenda).
Congratulations to
Rudy Mueller and
Elizabeth Hanson who were 1st N/S and Jonie Spiecker and
Hans Spiecker
(visiting) who were 1st E/W.
The game information including the handouts from last night and the game
results (with Traveler scores) can be accessed from this web site.
