Intermediate/Novice News, Notes and Stuff Week of October 18-24, 2005
Play with the teacher! Don't forget ... if you play regularly in the Monday Night Game, I will play with you some Wednesday night. I played with Bill Stinnett this last Wednesday and THANK GOD I did not embarrass myself. Bill and I had a good game with 53.97% placing 3rd N/S against some tough competition ... remember this is an open pairs game. The bottom line is that we had fun. I am looking for a partner for next Wednesday. Anyone interested?????

I have now been directing the Monday Night game for seven weeks ... up to now I have been picking topics for the lessons ... I would love some feedback. I would like to know how you think the game and lessons are going, and what lesson topics you would like to see in the next eight weeks. Do you like using the internet? Has it helped? I put a lot of time into writing the study papers ... have they helped. I am committed to this game through December 15 so we are about half-way through my commitment. What would you like to learn about in the next 8 weeks?
I would like to continue talking about the agreements on the convention card and make sure everyone knows what the bids and conventions mean. I would like to talk more about the rules of the game to make sure you know how to protect yourself. I have two additional handouts courtesy of the Bridge Club (Negative Doubles and Balancing) that I would like to work into the lessons. But none of this is the "sexy stuff" ... maybe you would like to learn about daring 3rd seat openings, when is it safe to mess with the opponent's auction, or probably the most important convention to the pros (Drury) ... we could put together a series leading up to Drury like we did New Minor Forcing.

Doubles' Handouts from Monday, October 17th Game On Monday I handed out the pamphlet on Doubles, as a thank you from the Bridge Club for Club Appreciation Month. This game has grown 4 tables since September and I did not have enough copies for everyone. Thanks to Club President Peter Seery I now have enough pamphlets for everyone who played on Monday night. If you did not receive a Doubles pamphlet, drop me a note and/or see me ... I will get you a copy.
My lesson on Monday specifically addressed Takeout Doubles and on the overhead I displayed my write-up on Minimum Offshape Takeout Doubles (Savannah Doubles). If you would like a copy of this paper you can print a copy from this website. Just go to the 1NT Library by clicking on the Library button at the top of this page. You will find the paper listed in the Subject index both by "Minimum Offshape Takeout Doubles" and by "Savannah Doubles".
Monday, October 17th Game Last night's game was a Club Championship (see October Special Events below) ... we again had 9 full tables ... GREAT turnout!! The lesson was on standard Takeout Doubles vs. Minimum Offshape Takeout Doubles (Savannah Doubles). The handout last night was the Champion Bridge Series pamphlet Doubles courtesy of the Bridge Club - October Club Appreciation Month.
Richard Sellers & Alan Leaver (1.55 masterpoints) were 1st N/S and Ken Kerr & Eugene Boros (2.06 masterpoints) were 1st E/W. Listed here are the top finishers ...
Congratulations to all.
The game information including the handouts from last night and the game
results (with Traveler scores) can be accessed from this web site.

HHI Non Life Master The HHI Fall NLM is now history. The tournament had 144.5 tables over the four-day event – a new October record. "Marty Davis did an outstanding job as tournament chair" stated Peter Seery, President of the HHI Bridge Association. "I can think of no other club in our area that has such as impressive NLM tournament reputation. Having Priscilla Smith as our tournament director this year was icing on the cake - she did a great job!"
Congratulations to to the following event leaders from the HHI/Bluffton area:
October Special Events Club Championship Week – The week of Oct 17th through the 22nd is the Bridge Club's Quarterly Club Championship Week. All games are rated as club championships offering more points. Playing in Club Championships is how you quickly accumulate points towards your Life Masters.
Remember Bridge should be fun!
