Stakeholder Game Sunday, April 25th |

One Year and Counting
With the upcoming Stakeholder Game on Sunday, April 25th it will be almost one year to the day that our new Bridge Club opened. At the first Stakeholder Game on Sunday, April 27, 2003 Lee Sturm, President of the Hilton Head Island Bridge Association (HHIBA), led those participating in the first game with a ceremonial card tearing.
The last game in the old Bridge Center was on Saturday afternoon and as soon as the last card was played many, busy hands working together moved the old to marry with the new to create a home for bridge on HHI. By rough calculation there have been some 500 games run in the new club.

Our good friend Craig Gibbons directed the 1st game in the new club. Craig was recovering from his last round of cancer treatments and joked about the naming of the Craig Gibbons Memorial Award (given to the 299’er with the most Club Points) being a little premature. We lost Craig and others friends this last year - most recently Morry Neiman and David Shenefeil.
With a track record hinting at spontaneity, oneNT is completing its 1st year in circulation with the establishment of a web site. While still in development, I have now posted all past issues of oneNT on the web - you can read the April 27, 2003 issue on the opening of the new club by clicking on the following link http://www.onent.com/oneNT_030427.htm or going to http://www.oneNT.com and looking under eNewsletters.
I am thrilled to say that the board of HHIBA has asked me to direct the Stakeholder Game on Sunday, April 25th. This game will be balanced and seeded. If you have not yet reserved your place for the Stakeholder Game you can sign up at the Bridge Club or send me an email to fred@onent.com and be sure to tell me who your partner will be for the game.

Frank Deakin
We will lose a friend and asset to the club this month, as Frank Deakin prepares to go home to England. Frank’s last game at the club will be Tuesday, April 27th at 1:00 pm. Many of Frank’s friends and students are planning a party for Frank’s last game. I am breaking out my last bottle of PIMM’s No 1 and we going to party. The club has offered to pay for the spirits and everyone is bringing food.
Frank has certainly been controversial … he is the kind of person who is strong willed and opinionated. You think the world of him one minute and would like to ‘chuck him in the dust bin’ the next. Regardless of how you feel about Frank, as an individual, the HHIBA and Bridge Club owe Frank a dept of gratitude. Frank has single-handedly brought along a whole generation of bridge players. We all love big games, but we all can’t do what Frank has done. Frank has trained over 500 bridge players in the last 3 years. Many of us found partners and played in Frank’s EasyBridge and Novice games. HHIBA will be presenting a certificate to Frank on the 27th. A number of us are chipping in to get Frank a little going away present … if you have an interest in contributing, see Kathie Walsh.
Frank’s Bridge Tour of England leaves in May and Frank leaves a week early on Thursday, April 29th to prepare for the tour. As much as I cringe every time I go into one of the island’s red-neck bars with Frank and he introduces me as his ‘mate’, I will miss Frank.

2‑over‑1 Game Force: Bridge for 21st Century
Beginning June 2nd a new intermediate bridge class on Two‑over‑One “2/1” Game Force Bridge – will be taught on Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:30 am. This class will run for 9 classes beginning Wednesday, June 2nd and ending Wednesday, July 28th and will cost $90.00. The text for this course is the 1st book in the series by Max Hardy ‘Standard Bridge Bidding for the 21st Century’.
|
|
This class is designed for the new and intermediate 2/1 bridge player and would be a precursor to the advanced classes being offered by the Bridge Club this spring. The classes will be taught by Fred Ferguson with guest lectures by many of the area’s top players including:
Marvin Shatz, Ginny Bednar, Roni Keisler, Ron Perry and Mary Alice Shenefeil.
More advanced players would want to take the class being sponsored by the Bridge Club and being taught by Marion Fletcher. This class uses as a reference the 2nd book in the series by Max Hardy ‘Advanced Bridge Bidding for the 21st Century'.
“This is a necessary book since the current material for new players on Two‑over‑one bidding is pretty well hidden. … Well done Max Hardy!”
