North American Pairs (NAP)

Don't forget that this Wednesday Night, August 27th at 7:00 pm is the final North American Pairs (NAP) qualifying game.  The North American Pairs is the premier open pair’s event sponsored by ACBL as qualifying event that allows pairs, who qualify at the Club level, to compete at the Unit and District levels for the right to compete at the Spring North American Bridge Championships (Spring NABC) being held this year in Reno, Nevada.  Wednesday's game will be stratified as to national competition: Flight A is open to any player; Flight B is open to players with less than 2000 MPs; and Flight C is open to NLMs – as of the 2003 June masterpoint cycle.  Don Buchanan will be directing this Wednesday's game.

Friday Night Bridge - Australian Wine Tasting

Our next Friday Night Bridge game will be Friday night, September 15th.  At September’s game we will have a wine tasting of Australian Shiraz wine.  Shiraz [shih-RAHZ] or as we in America call it Syrah [sih-RAH] is a majestic red with a pronounced pepper, spice, black cherry, and roasted nut flavors.  In France it is grown in the Rhone region, but the Australians are the ones who have made the wine popular with an increasing number of high-quality vineyards.

The Wall Street Journal last year published an article on Southeast Australian Shiraz focusing on quality wines for less than $20 a bottle.  I have been able to obtain bottles from the WSJ’s recommended list of very good wines under $10.00.  I have bottles of: Lindemans Bin 50, Jacob’s Creek, Black Opal (received the highest rating from WSJ’s tasting), and Koala Blue (Olivia Newton-John’s winery).  And to give you something to compare it too I have some Kendall‑Jackson California Syrah.  In addition, I will be making a Shiraz Sangria … we tested some at last Saturday’s game.

The party and festivities will start at 6:00 pm … with the game starting by 6:45 pm, thus, giving everyone a chance to play.

EasyBridge!

The bridge club is offering free bridge lessons on Thursday nights 7 p.m. at the club at the Port Royal Plaza.  These lessons are aimed at three types of players: those who have never played bridge before; those who have played in the past but have not played for awhile; and those who currently play, but would like to update their bidding to modern methods.

The EasyBridge course will run for 15 weeks, the cost of each session (after the first three) will be $6.00.  Each session stands alone, so you can miss a week or two and it won't stop you from understanding the remaining lessons.

If you are interested in joining us, please call Kathie Walsh at 689-6239.

2nd Stakeholder Game

The 2nd Stakeholder Game of 2003 will be on September 7th @ 1:00 pm.    The table fees for the game are free for all HHIBA Stakeholders.   Lee Sturm says that the club will be providing a wide variety of soft drinks, wine and cold beer.  We are also adding an ice cream social (with all the toppings) as a special feature to celebrate the end of our hot summer, says Sturm.  We are asking members to bring some finger food for during the game snacking.

The Stakeholder game will be limited 120 players and a signup sheet is at the Club.   Lee suggests you call the club if you would like your name added to the list.  (342-PLAY)

In the event that 120 Stakeholders do not sign up, we will sell regular entries to non-Stakeholders for the normal $6.00 table fee until all the chairs are full.  We hope to see all our investor members there!
