New Wednesday Night Game ... by Fred Ferguson
Beginning Wednesday, April 30th I will be moving my Wednesday afternoon game to Wednesday night at 7:00 pm in the new Bridge Club.  At the request of the Board of HHIBA, I will be developing a new game combining my previous open pairs game with the Wednesday novice pairs game.  I hope to make this game a win/win for both intermediate and advanced players, as well as, novice players by offering a 2 section game: Section O will be a Stratified Open Pairs game just like I have been running on Wednesday afternoons and Section N will be a Novice Game (tentatively 149'er).  I will then combine the two sections "in the computer" for an overall winner.  Each Section will play the same pre-dealt hands, but play a game pace more appropriate to the players.
Novice Pairs (tentatively 149'er) ... The Novice Pairs game (Section N) is designed to transition EasyBridge graduates, beginners, and new duplicate players into a more competitive game.  The Novice Pairs game will play the same the same hands as the Open Pairs, but that is the only relationship between the two sections.  Novice Pairs will compete among themselves with their own specific game movement and for section awards and masterpoints.  In the computer, I will combine the Novice Game (Section N) and Open Pairs (Section O) giving Novice Pairs an opportunity to compare board scores and results with the Open Pairs.

Open Pairs ... The Open Pairs game (Section O) is designed for intermediate and advanced players who would like to have a more competitive and faster pace game.  The atmosphere and pace of play for Section O will be appropriate for the more advanced players who are interested in developing a partnership or playing in sectional or regional rated events.  Open Pairs will play the same pre-dealt hands as the Novice Pairs, but Open Pairs will compete among themselves with their own specific game movement for section and overall awards and masterpoints.
Both Novice Pairs and Open Pairs will play the same pre-dealt hands and Hand Records will be provided.  As always the results and travelers will be posted on the web before players can return home and log-in to the web.  Look for a special emailing to provide more details.

Gatlinburg ...
Gatlinburg 2003 is the new record holder for the largest Regional Bridge Tournament in ACBL history with an astounding total of 7424 tables over the 6-1/2 day event.  The new record beats last year's record breaker by 379.5 tables, a whopping 5.4% increase when many were forecasting a slight downward turn.
There were players from 44 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Mexico and from several non ACBL affiliated foreign countries.  Twenty ACBL districts were represented by the total of 3223 players who played at least one session.  A grand total of over 59,000 masterpoints were awarded to 3,098 players.  There were sixty one players who won one hundred or more points and an amazing 274 players topped the fifty masterpoint level.  The median for all players who won masterpoints was 10.62 points.  For additional information, check out the following Gatlinburg links (single click) : President's Report | Gatlinburg Information | Masterpoint Winners |
