Stakeholder Game
The first annual Stakeholder Game is on Sunday, April 25th.
The party starts at 12:00 noon and the game starts at 1:00 pm. This is a
Club Championship rated game and will be set up in advance to balance the game.
With thirty-seven partnerships having already made
playing reservations, a 2 section game is anticipated. You can sign
up for the game at the Bridge Club or
send an email to
fred@onent.com ... be sure to tell us who your partner will be for the game.
Reservations will be accepted through Friday, April 23rd and seating assignments
will be posted on the web by late Saturday, April 24th. After the game has
been posted additional partnerships will be assigned open positions.
Club Manager Lee Sturm says that the HHI Bridge
Association will furnish all plastic ware and a variety of drinks from soft
drinks to wine. Members are requested to bring finger food. A
sign-up sheet for food will be posted at the club this week. If you have
questions about the arrangements contact Lee Sturm at

Double Knock-Out
Team Championship
The Hilton Head Island
Bridge Association is inaugurating the First Annual Low Country Double Knock-Out
Team Bridge Championship. This event is similar to a highly successful
championship conducted by the New York City Bridge Association. Just like the
NY event, matches can be played at any bridge club—on the island or at Okatie.
We will have 3 brackets—0 to 50, 0 to 300 and unlimited. This will enable all
levels of players to have some success. In fact, any team that loses a match
will only play other teams with a loss, right up until the finals. So everyone
has a chance.
Each match will use IMP
scoring which many players enjoy as a break from matchpoint scoring. And
everyone likes long matches against one team as it enables a team to strategize
what works against the other team. Something that cannot be done in a 6 or 8
board match.
The Association is
encouraging all first round matches to be played on May 2nd, but that is not a
requirement. Teams can consist of 4, 5 or 6 players. If you have a pair but
would like help finding another pair at the same level as you, Gary Donner will
help. You can e-mail him at
gdonner@earthlink.net.
We hope you join in this fun
event. Gary Donner

Craig Gibbons Memorial
Award
As you know the HHIBA awards
the Craig Gibbons Memorial Award each year. I am looking for some good
photos of Craig to include in a web page on Craig and the award. If you
have some neat photos of Craig, either in electronic or print format, please
loan them to me. I promise to take care of them and get them back to you
in good condition. Fred Ferguson 843.363.6416 or

Frank Deakin
Don forget Frank’s
last game at the club will be Tuesday, April 27th at 1:00 pm. Many
of Frank’s friends and students are planning a party for Frank’s last game. I
am breaking out my last bottle of PIMM’s No 1 and we going to party.
HHIBA will be presenting a certificate to Frank on the 27th.
A number of us are chipping in to get Frank a little going away present … if you
have an interest in contributing, see
Kathie Walsh.

In this 3Nt contract,
you have 8 (quick) winners: 2 spade winners, 1 heart winner, no immediate
diamond winners and 5 club winners. You only need to develop 1 one trick to
make your contract (9 tricks). With the ♦KJ764
in Dummy and ♦1098
in your hand it looks very promising that you can finesse against the ♦Q.
All it takes is for the ♦Q
to be on-side (50%) and you can probably take 12 tricks putting
Declarer's 2♠
and 7♥
on Dummy 4th and 5th diamond regardless of where the ♦A
sits. However, if the ♦Q
is off-side (50%) and your RHO returns his partner's spade lead the
opponents can knockout your last spade control and possibly win the ♦AQ,
a heart trick (either the
♥K
or
♥J)
and some number of spades setting your contract.
If however, you win the
♥A
and lead to the
♥QJ
you can promote one of your heart honors for your 9th trick and make your
contract 100% of the time. Do you
risk a 100% certainty of making your contract for a 50% possibility of
making significant up-tricks or going down in your contract. What do
you think? Send your comments to
